What a written quote should include

A quote you can compare has the same lines as the blank form below. When two companies quote the same job differently, one of these lines is usually missing.

Do plumbers charge for quotes?

Many do charge something to come out. Fixr's January 2025 figures put a service call or diagnostic fee at $50 to $300, and it pays for the trip and the time to find the problem. Some companies credit that fee against the repair if you go ahead; some don't. Ask before the visit, not after. For jobs a plumber can price without seeing, such as a standard water heater swap or a toilet replacement, many companies will give a phone price from their flat-rate book.

Phone price or on-site quote

A phone price works when the job is standard and visible: a like-for-like water heater, a new toilet, a disposal swap. It doesn't work for leaks you can't see, clogs that keep coming back or anything behind a wall. Describe the problem precisely on the call: what happens, where, since when, what you have shut off. The make and model of the appliance and a photo of the area save a second visit. Fixr's installation guide, for example, puts a typical tank water heater replacement at $900 to $3,000, and the spread is almost entirely in details a phone call can settle.

Comparing two quotes

1. Check that both describe the same scope, the same parts and the same code items.
2. Compare warranties on parts and on labor separately.
3. Ask who pulls the permit and whether its fee is in the price.
4. Ask when the work can start and how long the water will be off.
5. Look up both companies' licenses on your state's licensing board site.

Finding a plumber near me through this line

This site doesn't list or rank plumbers. When you call, the routing network connects you to a participating company that serves your ZIP code and is taking calls, and that company answers under its own name. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that most states and some localities license plumbers, so ask for the license number and check it.
