Where the clog is decides the method
A drain system is a tree. Each fixture drains through its own trap into a branch line; branches join a vertical stack; the stack turns into the building drain under the floor, which leaves the house as the sewer. A clog in a branch affects one fixture, or two that share a line, like a double kitchen sink. A clog in the building drain affects everything upstream of it, and it shows up first at the drain nearest the floor, often a basement floor drain or a first-floor tub.
So the first question a plumber asks is how many fixtures are slow. One means a hand tool through the fixture; several means a machine through a cleanout, and our page on the main line clog covers that case.

Prices depend on which line is blocked, how easy it is to reach, and whether the job happens during business hours.

Chemical drain openers: why plumbers ask about them
Caustic and acid drain openers can burn skin and eyes, and they sit in the trap when they fail to work. A plumber who opens that trap or runs a cable through it gets splashed. If you poured something in, say so on the phone and keep the bottle for the label. Enzyme products are a different thing: they digest organic buildup slowly and don't clear a blockage.
Access: a cleanout makes the job faster
A cleanout is a capped fitting that gives a straight path into the drain. The International Plumbing Code (IPC 2021 §708.1.3) requires one at the junction of the building drain and the building sewer, or within 10 feet of piping upstream of it, and §708.1.1 requires cleanouts on horizontal drains at intervals of no more than 100 feet. Older houses often have one buried, painted over or missing. Without it, the plumber pulls a toilet or works through a roof vent, which takes longer and costs more. Adding a cleanout during a repair is often money well spent.
When a clog keeps coming back
A drain that needs clearing twice a year has a cause, and cabling it again only resets the clock. Roots entering at clay pipe joints, a sagging section that collects debris, a broken or offset joint and heavy grease in a kitchen line are the usual ones. Is snaking or jetting better?
Neither is better in general. A cable machine punches through a blockage and is quick and inexpensive; a jetter scours grease and scale off the pipe wall and costs more. Plumbers usually cable first and jet when the clog keeps coming back.
Can a plumber clear a drain through the roof vent?
Sometimes, when there is no cleanout, but it means working on the roof with a heavy machine. Pulling a toilet to reach the drain, or adding a cleanout, is usually safer and gives a straighter path.
Why did the plumber recommend a camera?
Because a clog that returns within months usually has a cause in the pipe itself: roots at a joint, a sag that holds debris, a crack or an offset. The camera finds it and shows its distance from the cleanout.
How often should drains be cleaned?
A household drain that runs freely needs nothing. Lines with a history of roots or grease buildup are sometimes put on a schedule, and the plumber should base that interval on what the camera showed.
